Best Coast: The 2018 Volkswagen Beetle’s Stylish New Trim Level

2018 Volkswagen Beetle Coast Trim Edition

We’re digging Volkswagen’s latest Beetle trim. Called Coast, it builds on the 2018 Beetle’s S trim level and adds a bit of stylish verve to an interior that we generally already regard as one of the best designs in a reasonably priced vehicle.

The zazzy Coast swaps in Pepita cloth upholstery with a black and beige houndstooth pattern and a striking gray offset stripe running the length of the seat. The model also adds a special dash treatment that’s meant to evoke the look of a classic wooden surfboard. Rugged Monster Mats are there to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous seaside adventure, while the sill plates are similarly ruggedized. Outside, the rear end gets a spoiler. Buyers can opt for unique, Coast-only Deep Sea Teal paint, and the car rolls on 17-inch Heritage alloy wheels to complete the beach-retro vibe.

Additional fanciness includes a 6.3-inch Composition Media touchscreen infotainment system, automatic headlights with LED daytime running lights, rain-sensing wipers with heated washer nozzles, power-operated heated side mirrors, and a power sliding/tilting panoramic sunroof. The only option is a lighting package, which upgrades the front lamps to bixenon and the rears to LED.

There’s but one powertrain available, a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four that makes 174 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, backed by a six-speed automatic transmission. All in, buyers are looking at $23,970 (or $27,690 for a convertible), although they’ll need an additional $250 in pocket to swing the eye-searing Habanero Orange paint job and another $895 if they can’t live without the upgraded lighting. Beetle people know who they are. If you’re a Beetle person, the Coast seems like a pretty sweet deal, offering a more equipment than the one-step-from-base S, for less money than the loaded SE. Plus, Dude. Those seats.
