New Porsche Cayenne Diesel Delayed in Europe, Might Never Come to the U.S.

The next-generation Porsche Cayenne is just around the corner. We drove the prototype a few months ago, and the SUV is slated for unveiling on August 29. Under the hood, there will be a single- or twin-turbocharged V-6; the V-8 turbo will be launched at the Frankfurt auto show a few weeks later.

There also will be a V-6 plug-in hybrid coming soon, and there are strong hints about a V-8 plug-in hybrid as well, analogous to the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. It will make close to 700 horsepower. But there are two more versions in the wings that Porsche doesn’t talk about right now: a diesel 3.0-liter V-6 and a diesel 4.0-liter V-8.

Both engines were developed by Audi and adapted to the Cayenne, and they could be put into series production on very short notice. Porsche is unlikely to announce the market launch of the diesels, however, until the furor caused by the diesel-emissions scandal dies down. Two weeks ago, Germany’s minister for transportation ordered a stop-sale for the V-6 diesel version of the last Cayenne because of suspected trickery with the software in order to comply with emissions standards.

That shouldn’t be an issue with the new models, but the damaged reputation of diesel is an unfortunate fact. Although Porsche is waiting for better timing, killing off the diesel is hardly an option. “With European fuel prices, it is simply unthinkable that all of our diesel customers will switch into gasoline cars,” said a Porsche source. As to the United States, another Porsche diesel is within the realm of possibility—but our sources suggest it won’t arrive anytime soon.
